Why Choose Dental Implants?

While some people may turn towards traditional dentures, crowns, or bridges, dental implants are different than any other tooth-replacement option. For example, you can expect your implants to help:

  • Prevent bone density loss.
  • Stop teeth from shifting.
  • Protect facial structure.
  • Provide a sturdy foundation for a replacement tooth.
  • Improve your speech.
  • Keep your jawbone healthy.

Implants replace the roots of your missing tooth, stimulating your jawbone and anchoring your new dental crown firmly in its place. Your implants will be created specifically for you and will feel as reliable as natural teeth.

The Many Benefits of Dental Implants

Just What Exactly Are Dental Implants Anyway?

Dental implants are one of the most effective means to replace damaged or missing teeth. Made of high-quality material like bioceramics and titanium, a dental implant simulates a natural tooth root while being topped with a porcelain crown to look like one.

Being embedded into your jawbone directly, a dental implant provides a sturdy foundation for a dental crown or denture for full tooth restoration. You also get all the benefits of a natural tooth, like being able to still eat all your favorite foods—no matter how chewy or tough they are!

Health Risks Associated With Tooth Loss

Most people don’t realize how important it is to fill in that gap when they lose a tooth. However, if you don’t replace your tooth, one small gap can lead to:

  • Periodontitis.
  • TMD (TMJ disorder).
  • Overcrowded/shifting teeth.
  • More lost teeth.
  • Jawbone shrinkage.

Your dental implants will improve more than just your oral health—you’ll gain a better quality of life back. Improving your smile will impact every aspect of your life.

Loss of Your Jawbone Density

Our teeth are more integral to our oral health than most realize. Not only do they help us chew and speak, they also stimulate the nerves in our jaw bone to keep it healthy, strong, and functional. Missing teeth means less stimulation, which can mean a significant loss of bone density.

Thankfully, dental implants provide all necessary functions of a natural tooth and therefore reduce the risk of bone loss.

A Secure Foundation For Your New Smile

The top feature that sets dental implants apart is their secured foundation. Other means of replacing a tooth—such as a bridge or dentures—are secured to the neighboring teeth or gums, leading to discomfort, slipping out of place, or being lost.

These aren’t a problem with dental implants! They are fastened directly to your jaw just like your natural teeth—allowing them to feel much more comfortable and secure.

Personalizing Your Smile With Dental Implant Options

Multiple implant options are available. You can have a single damaged or missing tooth replaced with one dental implant, or, thanks to implant supported crowns and bridges, you can have multiple teeth restored without issue.

A completely new smile is also possible for those missing all their teeth or enduring extensive dental damage. Each option can be discussed when scheduling your dental implant consultation.

Dental Implants For a Full Mouth Restoration

Full mouth restorations offer a brand new smile when a patient is missing all of their teeth or needs most teeth replaced, whether due to dental trauma or from suffering from advanced stages of gum disease.

Incredibly, all teeth can be replaced with as little as four implants that will support brand new pontics (false teeth). This makes a full mouth restoration the solution to address the most extreme dental issues.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Their popularity is proof enough that most who are missing teeth are candidates for dental implants. You should consider dental implants if any of the following apply:

  • You are missing one or more teeth.
  • You want a permanent solution for tooth loss.
  • You have healthy gums.
  • You still have a strong jawbone or are able to get a bone graft.
  • You prefer a more secure and natural solution than bridges or dentures.

How to Choose an Implant Dentist You Trust

You deserve to be 100% confident when choosing to start the dental implants process. We would love to sit down with you and discuss any questions or concerns you have about dental implants.

No two smiles are the same, so the dental implant process should be different for every person. At Orange Door Dental Group, we’ll treat you like the individual you are, from the implant solution to the treatment timeline.

What Should You Expect?

1
The Initial Consultation:

You can expect your initial evaluation to include:

  • X-rays.
  • Impressions.
  • Selecting the right crown to match your natural teeth.

Together with our dentists, you will determine how many teeth you want to replace and discuss all your medical conditions and medications. Our dentist can remove your teeth before any other dental work is performed if necessary.

After that, you and our dentist will set a date for the procedure.

2
Bone Graft (If Necessary)

As mentioned above, teeth contribute to dental health in many different ways, including keeping your jawbone healthy. If you are interested in dental implants but have suffered a loss in bone density from having missing teeth for too long, a bone graft might be necessary. This will provide proper support to the implant which, in turn, will allow your new teeth to begin strengthening your jaw naturally.

3
Placement Surgery: The Post

Dental implants require three parts; the post, the abutment, and the crown. The post supports the other two and needs minor surgery for placement. A small incision along the gums allows the post to be placed, allowing it to fuse with the bone as you heal.

While this is a minor procedure, we’re committed to your comfort and peace of mind. Please discuss additional sedation if you have concerns about dental anxiety.

4
Healing and Osseointegration

After the implant is placed, we’ll send you home with instructions on how to take care of your implant while your mouth heals. Our team cares about your health and wants to make sure you’re completely healed before proceeding to the next step of the process.

It will take around 3–9 months for your jaw to go through osseointegration: this is the process of your bone bonding with your implant.

5
The Abutment Placement Process

Once your jaw and implant are ready, you will come back to our office so that we can place an abutment on top of your implant. The abutment acts as a connector between the supporting post and the crown (the top of the replacement tooth).

After the abutment is placed, your gums will be allowed time to heal. Once healed, the crown will then be secured to this connector, completing your brand new tooth.

6
Crafting Your Crown

Even while you are healing from the abutment placement, we are still hard at work ensuring you get the finest in tooth restoration. Using the impressions and references taken prior to the surgery, we are crafting a dental crown that will match the look of your natural teeth. These crowns will also function like your natural teeth, with the added benefits of being resistant to stains and decay.

7
Completing The Implant With Crown Placement

The final stage is where we place your crown (or dental bridge or implant denture) and complete the dental implant restoration which will restore your smile and boost your oral health. As your dental family, we will walk with you through every single step of the process. We will be there to answer any question that arises and to help you feel confident and comfortable in every stage of the process.

Additional Dental Implant Considerations

At Orange Door Dental, we believe in providing each patient with the means to accomplish their dental health goals. Versitial procedures like dental implants are a great way to meet personal goals whether they are for cosmetic or health reasons.

So we encourage you to explore all of your dental implant options to create a treatment as unique and successful as your new smile. Considerations include the following:

Big Benefits From Mini Dental Implants

Ideal for anyone with bone loss, can’t undergo surgery, or want a less involved procedure but still seek to benefit from dental implants. These implants are placed over the gum instead of underneath, requiring only a single visit and localized anesthetic.

All-on-4® Treatment Concept

The solution to address even the most extreme cases involving tooth loss or dental damage, the All-on-4® treatment concept can provide a brand new smile with only four implants. These implants create the foundation to replace all missing teeth, top or bottom.

Fixed Implants for a Secure Solution

Traditional dentures are known to slip, leading to discomfort or embarrassing situations. Fixed dental implants are the solution, providing a permanent foundation to support your new teeth. A long term, effective means to restore your smile without any additional hassles.

Removable Implant Options Available As Well

For those who have more delicate jawbones or don’t like the idea of a permanent treatment, removable implant options are available. While these still require a dental implant placement, the dentures or false teeth can be removed for easier cleaning and comfort.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

Throughout your treatment, no question is too small or too big when it comes to your oral health! We believe the more informed you are, the more empowered you will feel going into your procedure. Bring your list of questions to each appointment and we will help answer them.

Dental implants are an investment in your oral future and quality of life. They are high-quality and lost lasting, so they’re more costly than other options—but worth every penny.

Orange Door Dental Group has plenty of payment options that can make implants affordable for anyone. You can qualify for CareCredit payment plans, or use your insurance company. We accept several insurance policies for your convenience.

During the actual surgery process, anesthesia will be your best friend. After the surgery, your jawbone will need to heal. You should leave pain-free, but you’ll likely feel some tenderness as you heal. Our dentists will prescribe the right medication to help ease your healing process in the days following your initial surgery.

If you have any struggles, we will be there for you every step of the way.

Once your implant restoration is complete, you will be able to carry on with your life without even thinking about the new implants. They will quickly become as normal to you as your natural teeth are, and should last just as long!

The implant itself is built to last the rest of your life, and has been tested with a 20–25 year lifespan. The crown on top may need updated about every 10 years or longer with good care.

The best candidates for dental implants have healthy gums and are old enough that their jawbone isn’t still growing. Having the right amount of jawbone material is important, but if your jaw isn’t quite strong enough, we can look into giving you a bone graft.

Our dental team will also ask about:

  • Alcohol consumption.
  • Smoking habits.
  • Diabetes or gum disease.
  • Cancer, especially oral cancer.

These help us gain a full picture of your past and current oral health and determine additional safety measures to include should you go through with your implant surgery.

It’s always good to be prepared! The dental implant process can be a long one, and the surgery might be intimidating for you. If this is the case, we understand your concerns and even offer comfort dentistry to help!

In many cases, however, treatment anxiety can be addressed with some simple preparation. The following are some tips to help you mentally and physically prepare yourself.

Doing everything you can beforehand to prepare will help you to feel as relaxed as possible going into your initial surgery.

  • Schedule time off work.
  • Plan someone to drive you to and from the appointment.
  • Stock your kitchen with soft foods.
  • Pick up any prescriptions our dentist has prescribed.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol for a couple of weeks before surgery.

Our dental team will have your back throughout the entire process.

There are rare cases of dental implants that don't perform as intended. Most often, a dental implant will fail when it cannot properly attach to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration.

Thankfully, Orange Door Dental Group focuses on comprehensive care, taking all the necessary steps to ensure the success of your implant. This includes evaluating bone density to determine osseointegration is achievable.
